Wake

You wake on an iron bed.

The room is cold. Outside the window, there is not night. There is fog.

The controller blinks red: Fog-lamp pressure low. Add fuel immediately.

The radio exhales. A woman says, "Do not open the door." Then something knocks twice outside.

The main hall smells of wet iron, old lamp oil, and paper handled by frightened hands. Emergency bulbs tremble in wire cages. Each blink makes the windows look closer than before, and the silence after the knock feels arranged.

You move with one hand on the wall while pipes tighten and glass flexes. You do not remember arriving, and that missing space becomes another object in the room. You test your own name silently. It still fits, but not with confidence.

Every action spends time, warmth, power, or nerve, and the fog seems to keep the account better than you do.

You take inventory the way frightened people do: sleeves wet, pulse fast, no memory of the crossing, no clear reason for the taste of salt at the back of your throat. The station does not feel abandoned. It feels paused.

The first decision is not dramatic. It is simply whether you can trust your hands to move before the fog decides for you.

You stay with wake long enough for the practical surface to crack. Beneath every switch and notebook is the same human question: what did the last keeper believe they were saving when they made the mistake you are now trying not to repeat?

A part of you wants to wait for a rescuer, a supervisor, anyone with a dry coat and an ordinary explanation. Another part has already understood the room better than that. The station is giving you instruments because no one else is coming in time.

The lamp panel hums under your fingers. It feels less like a machine than a pulse you have inherited without consent, and the shame of not knowing how to keep it alive arrives before the fear does.
